AS Level Maths: common questions
What is on the AS Maths exams?
Two written papers for every board. AQA 7356: Paper 1, pure and mechanics, 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks; Paper 2, pure and statistics, 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks. Edexcel 8MA0: Paper 1, pure mathematics, 2 hours, 100 marks; Paper 2, statistics and mechanics, 1 hour 15 minutes, 60 marks. OCR A H230: Paper 1 (H230/01), pure and statistics, 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks; Paper 2 (H230/02), pure and mechanics, 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks. Checked on each board's website on 5 October 2026.
Can I use a calculator in AS Maths?
AQA says a calculator is required in all its 7356 assessments, and OCR allows a scientific or graphical calculator in both H230 papers. For Edexcel 8MA0, check Pearson's specification. Checked on the AQA and OCR specifications on 5 October 2026.
When are the AS Maths exams?
OCR runs one AS series a year, in May and June. Its June 2027 timetable has H230/01 on the afternoon of 13 May 2027 and H230/02 on the afternoon of 21 May 2027 (checked 5 October 2026). Check your own board's timetable for AQA and Edexcel.
Does my AS result count towards the A Level?
No. The Department for Education's guide to the reformed qualifications says AS results no longer count towards an A level.
Is the AS Maths content the same for AQA, Edexcel and OCR?
Yes. The topics are the same for every board: the AS part of the A Level Maths content set by the Department for Education. Boards differ in how they split it across their two papers.
Which A Level Maths topics are not on the AS exam?
Numerical Methods and Moments are A Level only, and so is the Year 13 part of every other topic: for example arithmetic and geometric series, radians, the chain rule, integration by parts, the normal distribution, projectiles and friction.
Are the questions on this site AS past paper questions?
No. Every question is original, written in the style of Edexcel papers, and comes with a step-by-step mark scheme. For real AS papers, use the official copies on your board's website (links on this page).
