Common structures
- Direct: assume premise, derive conclusion via known facts.
- Contradiction: assume the conclusion is false; derive a contradiction.
- Contrapositive: to prove $P \Rightarrow Q$, prove $\neg Q \Rightarrow \neg P$.
- Counterexample: one instance where a claim fails is enough to disprove.
Useful facts
- $n$ even $\Leftrightarrow n = 2k$ for some integer $k$; $n$ odd $\Leftrightarrow n = 2k+1$.
- Product of any $n$ consecutive integers is divisible by $n!$.
- Every integer $> 1$ has a unique prime factorisation (FTA).
Questions about A Level formulas
Are these formulas given in the exam?
Some are printed in Pearson's formulae booklet and some you must learn. Our one-page IAL formula sheet and UK A Level formula sheet mark which is which, and the formulas to memorise page lists the ones the booklet leaves out.
Can I use a calculator in every IAL unit?
Yes. A calculator is allowed in every Edexcel IAL maths unit, P1 included. Method marks still need written working, and some questions say that answers relying on calculator technology are not acceptable. The calculator guide shows the keystrokes.
Where can I practise using these formulas?
Each unit page has every topic with a worked example and practice questions: P1, P2, P3, P4, S1 and M1. For UK A Level, use the A Level Maths topic pages.
Can I print this page?
Yes. Use the Print / Save as PDF button at the top, or your browser's print option, to get a clean printable copy.
