Starter (5 minutes)
Warm-up while teams get settled.
- Work out 6 × 7.
- Work out √81.
Main activity (35 minutes)
Opens these five rounds on our Jeopardy board for teams (teacher sign-in): pick a round and a points value, reveal the answer, award the points.
Round 1: Algebra (7 min)
Five questions, getting harder.
- Simplify √50.
- Solve 32x = 81.
- Find the remainder when x3 + 2x − 1 is divided by (x − 1).
- Find the discriminant of 2x2 + 3x − 5.
- Solve |x − 3| = 5.
Round 2: Coordinate geometry (7 min)
Five questions, getting harder.
- Find the gradient of 3x + 2y = 6.
- Find the centre and radius of (x − 2)2 + (y + 1)2 = 25.
- Find the midpoint of (1, 4) and (7, −2).
- Find the gradient of a line perpendicular to y = 4x − 1.
- A line passes through (2, 3) and is perpendicular to y = 2x + 1. Find its y-intercept.
Round 3: Trigonometry (7 min)
Five questions, getting harder.
- Write down sin(π/6).
- Convert 135° to radians.
- Solve tan x = 1 for 0° ≤ x < 360°.
- Write down the exact value of cos 30°.
- Find the area of a sector of radius 4 cm and angle 1.5 radians.
Round 4: Calculus (7 min)
Five questions, getting harder.
- Differentiate 5x3.
- Find ∫ 4x3 dx.
- Find the x-coordinate of the stationary point of y = x2 − 8x + 3.
- Evaluate ∫13 2x dx.
- Differentiate e3x.
Round 5: Statistics (7 min)
Five questions, getting harder.
- X ~ B(20, 0.3). Find E(X).
- Find the mean of 2, 4, 6, 8.
- P(A) = 0.4 and P(B | A) = 0.5. Find P(A ∩ B).
- Z ~ N(0, 1). Write down P(Z < 0).
- X ~ B(4, 0.5). Find P(X = 4).
Extension (5 minutes)
If two teams are level at the end.
- Tie-break, closest wins: how many seconds are there in a week?
For teachers
Teacher notes and full worked answers
- How to run it: teams of three or four with a mini whiteboard. Read each question out (or use ‘Play it on the projector’ above for a Jeopardy board with team scores). Questions get harder through each round: 1 point for question 1 up to 5 points for question 5, or use the board’s 100 to 500.
- Tie-break: every team writes one estimate; the closest wins.
